Taylor’s Simple Thought

Puritans are thought to be some of the first settlers in the New World. Their reason for leaving Europe was to avoid persecution for their beliefs. Puritans believe all was done to glorify God and that by God all things are possible. Puritans also believed in predetermination, this means God has already decided where a Puritan will end up, heaven or hell. The Puritans had strict religious beliefs in that they were sent over to the New World by God to “establish God’s city on earth” as the New Israelites (class notes). Puritans trust in signs from God. All things that are done good received a good sign from God and vice versa, this showed God’s approval or disapproval. God’s approval was necessary for the Puritans. Self sacrifice was a way of life for God’s people. All is the way it is because God wants it to be like that. For example, the poor are poor because this is the way God wants it.
