An important idea in Tar Baby, by Toni Morrison, is the conflicts that occur of different manners towards life between blacks and whites, and men and women. These conflicts are always distinct, but they are noticeable underneath the exterior.
The conflicts between men and women come into view in the relationship between Valerian and Margaret and Jadine and Son. Earlier in the relationship between Valerian and Margaret, Valerian is absorbed by his work, thus causing Margaret to become bored at home. This is one of the reasons why Margaret decides to have a baby, Michael, who she inflicts pain on physically.
