Systems Theory in Family Counseling

Systems theories are theories used in counseling that place an emphasis on group interaction and interpersonal causality. Their focus is on how the interaction of parts influences the operation of the system as a whole. Families are greatly affected by how its members interact, and systems theories are excellent approaches to use when counseling them.
There are many counseling approaches based on systems theory. In Bowenian systems theory, the focus is on differentiation. Its founder, Murray Bowen, believed that people who do not recognize and correct patterns passed down from previous generations are likely to repeat them and pass them on to their own family. He believed that it was essential for individuals to differentiate themselves from others, especially their family.
