The sexually active men and women of today are aware of numerous sexually-transmitted diseases that they face by having unprotected sex. One of the diseases is called syphilis. Syphilis has been known to cause devastating epidemics. What is syphilis and how is it transmitted, what are its symptoms, and how is it diagnosed and treated will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
Syphilis is a sexually-transmitted disease that is caused by the fragile bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is transmitted via sexual contact from the infected person to the uninfected person. It spreads from the initial ulcer to the skin or mucous membranes of the genitalia; it may also be spread to the mouth, anus or broken skin on other parts of the body.
