Symbolism paper on The Bean Trees

How can you find out a meaning of something if it isn’t directly told to you? Symbols are what can do this. Many symbols support themes throughout The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver. The cycle of life is an important theme and symbols such as Newt Hardbine, Mothering, Turtle and Ismene, and the bean trees all support this theme.
Newt Hardbine is a symbol for the cycle of life. He was like Taylor’s other half in the story, “If you were to look at the two of us, myself [Taylor] and Newt side by side in the sixth grade, you could have pegged us for brother and sister.” (2) In grade school many people would confuse them of being in the same family since they both were poor and appeared to be going no where in life. But in the beginning on the book, Newt got in an accident with his father and he had to be rushed to the emergency room where Taylor witnessed his death.
