Sweden SWEDEN NORRLAND – PERIFERAL REGION Composed of old resistant crystalline rock (part of the Baltic Shield). SOILS A thin layer of Acidic soil covers Norrland. Soils are infertile. Soils are more fertile along coastal lowlands. The Norrland is deeply dissected by numerous rivers (Dal, Ume and Skelliptea). These rivers are all parallel to each other and run eastwards to the Gulf of Bothnia. Ribbon lakes on these rivers provide cheap abundant HEP. CLIMATE The Colian Mountains in Norway provide a barrier for Sweden against maritime influences and the North Atlantic drift. Sweden experiences a cold temperate continental climate. This region is more exposed to icy Siberian influences in winter. Winters are cold with temps below freezing point and decrease northwards. Summers are short and relatively cool.
