Surrealism

Surrealism was one of the largest artistic movements of the twentieth century. The movement was initiated by André Breton in 1924. Surrealism both shocked and fascinated the art world as well as the general public. The artist Salvador Dali came to become one of the most popularly known members of surrealism but was later ostracised by Breton and other colleagues when they believed his work started to become too commercial. Breton dismissed Dali as ‘avida dollars’.
