The play 'Summer Of The Seventeenth Doll' deals with one major issue, change. The effect it has on those who are unwilling to change, and unwilling to grow up and face life's obligations. The main changes in this play are; Nancy getting married, Olive introducing Pearl, Barney losing his charm, and Roo not being the Alpha male any more.




Olive has the most difficulty adjusting to change in the play. The small group of friends (Roo, Barney, Nancy and Olive) has been broken up during 'the season' with Nancy getting married. Throughout most of the play Olive doesn't radiate an image of being affected by Nancy's absence, however she does feel betrayed. This is obvious in her choice not to go to Nancy's wedding. Olive does however, feel pity for Nancy, feeling she's made the 'wrong' decision.
