Summary of Beowulf

Beowulf describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. In the beginning Hrothgar people open by rejoicing in joy because of their joyful lives. They were under the impression from the beginning that God made the earth, the water surrounding, and he set the sun and the moon as lights for people and adorned the earth with limbs and leaves for everyone. The people are happy until the wanderer of the wasteland, Grendal the demon began his crimes. It was Grendal’s funeral that was described in the beginning of the poem. He took many an enemy’s chair and even in death the wisest alive can not tell where a death ship goes.
Grendal was of a race of monsters exiled from mankind by God. He was of the race of Cain, that man punished for murdering his brother. From that family comes giants who fought with God and got repaid with the flood. This whole beginning set the elegiac mood for the whole poem.
