By the 1860s, not only was the United States divided into the North and the South, but the South was also divided into three separate regions. The Upper South consisted of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. The Border South, located between the Upper South and the Lower South was made up of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The Lower South was comprised of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. By this same time in the 1860s, the demand for cotton became enormous due to the fact that textiles could be mass-produced thanks to the revolution. As a result of this massive demand for cotton, the South’s economy was largely based on this one cash crop. Cotton then became the economic basis for sectionalism in the South.
