Summary

As research continues to develop and advance, one finding has remained consistent across studies; The engagement of students in the material being discussed in any content area is essential to comprehension as well as in fostering a continued desire to learn. And all of this can only occur if the students schema, or prior knowledge, is activated. Researcher Alan M. Frager explored the areas of affect involved in the process of reading for comprehension in the content areas. He explains that his work has exposed an undeniable correlation between a readers cognitive capacities for interpretation, comprehension and assimilation of the information presented and the affective qualities such as interest, procrastination, self-confidence, control of content-area-reading-negativity, exhibited by the reader.
