Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
The most recent definition of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history (Definitions).
There is no known cause for SIDS, which is what makes it so tragic. But there have been many studies done on it, and there are many theories. One specific theory is that infants who are accustomed to sleeping on their backs, and then are placed on their stomachs or sides to sleep are at an increased risk (Bock).
