Styal Mill

Samuel Greg was born in 1758; he was the 3rd son of Thomas Greg. Thomas Greg often suffered periods of financial difficulty so his Brother in law offered to adopt Samuel in 1766. Robert Hyde was himself a successful textile merchant in Manchester; Greg entered the business first as a European traveller in 1778. He became a partner in 1780 and then owner 2 years later. In 1783 Greg made several journeys into the countryside around Manchester searching for a suitable fast-flowing river Bollin that would power his mill. A number of factors made Greg choose the site at styal, through this essay I will be explaining the factors on which made Greg choose to build his mill at styal.
The most essential reason I believe Greg made his decision on was the fact that the river Bollin was situated right along side to the site at styal, The river Bollin was ideal as it could be adapted to have a weir and a headrace, this is great for the mill as it would direct the current and make it flow faster,...
