The Sherlock Holmes series of short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has always had a mythical allure to readers ever since that fateful first short story appeared in the Strand Magazine. As George Newnes, editor of the Strand, once noted, “Sherlock Holmes is the definitive heroic fictional detective.” Through his remarkable facility for disguise, Holmes is able to blend in with his environment, an important aid in his battles against enemies. As well, the close affinity Holmes feels between himself and the “criminal” enables himself to adapt and think like the criminal. Finally, Holmes’ broad knowledge assists him greatly in solving his cases. Therefore, the adaptability of Holmes’ character facilitates his victory in his fights against crime.
