Strength training is used primarily in sports. Though, it can also be used to just get in shape and look better. To understand strength and strength training you must first understand the muscular system, specifically the skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles are attached to the skeleton and are responsible for moving limbs and other body parts. Muscle cells are long, striated and multinucleate. The function of muscle tissue is to contract or shorten. When muscles contract it causes movement, maintains posture, stabilizes joints, and generates heat.
Myosin heads on the thick filaments of the cell attach to the thin filaments.and when the heads pivot it slides the thin filaments toward the center of the sarcomere. This causes the muscle to contract. There are three different types of contractions: eccentric, isometric, and concentric.
