Story of An Hour

In “The Story of an Hour”, the writer creates an upsetting, joyful, and shocking tone. This is done through the action and sequences in the story, as well as the outlook of the characters in the story.
In the beginning of the story, the tone is upsetting. This tone is created through the news of the death of Mr. Mallard. Mrs. Mallard seems to be upset by the news. “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arm” (The Story and its Writer 5th edition p.177). This makes the reader feel sorry for Mrs. Mallard because, as any wife would be, she is upset and sad. Later, her reaction changes. “When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone” (The Story and its Writer 5th edition p.177). The death of her husband upsets her so much that it touches her soul. She is “pressed down by physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul” (The Story and its Writer 5th edition p....
