Kubrick as an Auteur Director


To prepare for writing this paper I went to the library to watch both Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange. I watched them one after the other so that the first one would be fresh in my head and I would be able to make comparisons between the two more easily. After watching them I came to the definitive conclusion that Kubrick’s style between the two films, in almost every aspect, remains unchanged. Auteur is defined as “a filmmaker, usually a director, who exercises creative control over his or her works and has a strong personal style.” After I read this I thought to myself that there is no better way to describe Kubrick as a director. He exercises complete creative control, and due to the similarities, it seems that he has a strong personal style.
