Spunk



In the short story Spunk by Zora Hurston (1927), the author used a lot of mystery in her story. Hurston used many symbols in her story for the reader to pick up on how the story will unfold and determine who really has the “spunk.”
First the story took place near Orlando, Florida in the early 1920’s. The author did not give any hints to the setting of the story until she mentioned “at the general store later on, they all talked of locking him up until the sheriff should come from Orlando…” (355). Although she mentioned Orlando, she never mentioned the exact state or year. Throughout the story Hurston brings up the “palmetto thickets,” which gives another hint that the story takes place in Florida (where palmetto’s are found).
