Three decades ago, hall of fame football player Terry Bradshaw signed a multi-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for fifty-thousand dollars. He became one of the greatest quarterbacks of the game, leading his team to four Super Bowl victories, the most by any quarterback through the present day. Sports began to thrive across the world, helping to improve the economy.
In August 2002, rookie Joey Harrington of the Detroit Lions, signs a contract for thirty-six and a half million dollars. Is Harrington worth being paid seven-hundred and thirty times what the legendary Bradshaw earned? It’s hard to believe how much can change in so little time. Sport is a thriving business headed in the wrong direction. The amount of money present day athletes receive is resulting in numerous negative effects on sport and its surroundings.
