Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher, was born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. His lived with his mother, Sarah Gleichman Escher, two older brothers, and his father, George Arnold Escher, who was a chief engineer for the government bureau. When Escher was young, his family moved to Arnhem. He attended Elementary and Secondary school there, and in a town called Zandovoort on the coastline. When he was about nine, he started learning carpentry and piano. Later in secondary school, all his grades were very weak, except drawing. His Art teacher took an interest in him and soon taught him how to make linocuts (linocuts are designs cut into linoleum.). During 1913, his parents made him go to a religious school, where he met his life long friend, Bas Kist. They both began to experiment in printing techniques, as recommended by their respective art teachers.
