Government Reviewing Affiliation

Premier Health Partners, have received notice that the United States Department of Justice is investigating the affiliation between MedAmerica Health Systems and Samaritan Health Partners. We are cooperating fully in this matter and have begun gathering the requested information.

As you may recall, the Federal Trade Commission in 1995 looked into whether PHP, the joint operating company formed between Miami Valley Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, violated any anti-trust laws.

Following that investigation during 1995-96, the FTC determined not to challenge the affiliation. However, the government did leave the door open to re-investigate numerous hospital mergers and it is now exercising that option. Within the last several months the FTC announced it intended to take a second look at hospital consolidations such as ours, which are commonplace across the country.
