Sophocles

Sophocles was the first to write greek tragedies in a non-trilogic

form. His greatest work was the play of Oedipus the King, known in Latin as

Oedipus the Rex. It was written for an annual festival where playwrights

competed for prizes. This was written in an era noted as the Golden Age for

philosophy. During this period many were questioning Greeks of their

mythology. Socrates a popular philosopher during this time was actually

prosecuted for expressing doubts on gods. This play was written to question

whether the Greeks believed in their own mythology. One of the major

themes of this play was fate and destiny. Greeks had strong beliefs in destiny

and what the gods had predetermined for them during this time.
