Sons and Lovers: Relationship Between Mother and Son

In D.H. Lawrence’s novel Sons and Lovers, the relationship between mother and son is the central focus. The mother’s obsession with her son and the emotions that arise greatly affect the characters. Through her attachment, Paul is unable to grasp the concept of loving others because his mother is the strongest influence in his life. It is expressed through her hatred of Paul’s love interest, Paul’s inability to be affectionate with Miriam, and his struggle to balance the feelings with his mother and the other women in his life.
