Song of Roland

The Song of Roland displays the qualities of a knight during Charlemagne’s reign as being brave, loyal, and intelligent. These characteristics were to be found in the ideal knight, as Roland displayed in the text.
Knights were loyal to both their nobleman and god, “For our king we must be prepared to die. Help us to sustain the Christian faith.” (Line 1128+29) Loyalty was displayed in the battlefield, where dying for the cause of your ruler was the ultimate exhibition of devotion.
