Social Work Practice

Prevention
Social Work:
The primary focus of social work is working with individuals, families & groups within their social context. Through the training, knowledge & skills, which support a high standard of professionalism, the social work task is to facilitate & enable to identify & make decisions. (Parker in Holman; Pg 82)

Primary Prevention:
Primary Prevention is thought of as comprising those services, which provide general support to families and reduce the levels of poverty, stress, insecurity, ill health or bad housing to which they may otherwise be exposed. E.g. Social Welfare System

Secondary Prevention:
Secondary Prevention relates to help offered once a problem has arisen. At this stage services are likely to be restricted to those who are assumed to be at ¡§special risk¡¨ or whose circumstances warrant special priority. E.g. Child Care Policy, Social Work
