In the novel Snow Falling on Cedars, the author David Guterson maintains our interest in various ways. Snow Falling on Cedars is written in a melancholy mood that complements the sobering murder trial in the midst of a snowstorm and the characters memories. It is presented in the closed world of San Piedro Island and the even more closed world of Amity Harbour Courthouse. The story uses parallel plot structure, one story involves the quest for the truth about a court case, and the other plot involves Ishmael Chambers and his search for the meaning in life. By the use of this structure Guterson establishes an emotional connection between the readers ad characters. This influences the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the novel.
