Sleepwalking Disorder

Abstract

Sleepwalking is otherwise known as Somnambulism. It occurs during the non-REM sleep stage of unconsciousness. It is a sleep disorder more commonly affecting young boys. Sleepwalking affects adults as well, only more rarely. However, the episodes have increased intensity due to the adults’ aggression and other psychological factors. The sleepwalker appears to be awake and staring, almost zombie-like. Any number of activities may occur from watering plants to driving. Usually insignificant, the episodes can be very dangerous for the sleepwalker. Some rummage for food in kitchens and wake up bloated and sick. The sleeper can injure themselves on objects and pitfalls. Several murder cases exist in which the defendant has used sleepwalking as a defense, stating that there was no intent because of unconsciousness.
