Sleep Disorders

I will start to explain a little about normal sleep patterns to better understand what a sleep disorder is. NREM sleep is the stage in which there are no rapid eye movements. It is called “quiet sleep,” because heart rate and respiration are slow and regular, there is little body movement, and blood pressure and brain activity are at their lowest. There are four stages of NREM, stage 1 is the lightest and stage 4 the deepest. Our bodies gradually pass from one stage to the next.
REM sleep accounts for twenty to twenty-five percent of an adult’s normal night of sleep. This is the stage in which we have rapid eye movement. Our bodies go through a lot during the night. Also while we are asleep our body functions and metabolic rate slow, decreasing the workload on your heart. Muscles relax and your body conserves energy. Some may say that sleep is important for the renewal and repair of body cells and tissues.
