Slavery Between 1607-1775

Economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy in the southern colonies between 1607 and 1775. The growth of slavery grew tremendously between these years. Slaves contributed largely to the South’s population. New fertile land meant an increased need for slave labor. Slaves were treated horribly by their masters, and lived under terrible conditions.
