Slaughterhouse Five MAdness Throughout The Slaughter House Five numerous signs of delusion and “madness” arise in the emotional twists and turns of the main character, Billy Pilgrim. If we go into the state of mind that Billy is in and journey to the absolute core of his “madness” we can then begin to unravel this madness and really start to realize it is not madness yet the shallowness of a race that cannot accept anything other than what they can emotionally and physically encounter. Billy, the novel’s protagonist, has become “unstuck in time,” and he travels between moments of his life, unable to control his time travel. His first occurrence of time travel begins in World War 2 just before his capture by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge...
