Six Day War and the UN

There are many reasons why after 1956 War broke out between Israel and neighboring countries. This was a combination of Egypt and Syria becoming more aggressive towards Israel, water disputes and intensifying terrorist attacks. The United Nations played a modest role at the time of the Six Day War. This contribution consisted of, pre war, being ordered out of Egypt and post war, passing a resolution which was ignored.

After 1959, Egypt’s leader – Colonel Gamel Nassar, was on good terms with the Soviet Union. With gained military and technical assistance, Egypt became equipped militarily to deal with Israel. Syria was also developing, with the ‘Baath Party’ –an anti-Semitic political party, coming to power in 1961; advocating a radical and aggressive approach towards Israel.
