Sir Walter Raleigh of Hayes Burton, Woodbury

Sir Walter Raleigh had an interesting childhood. Sir Walter Raleigh was born

in the year of 1552. Walter was 6 feet tall and a large man by the height being

less back then. When the years of 2-6 came and went, Queen Mary the first was

ruling. The last 4 years of her ruling was dedicated to burning people at the stake.

“…during the last four years of Queen Mary’s reign no less than 288 persons

were burnt at the stake for their adhesion to the Protestant faith.” This is why she is

called Bloody Mary.



The parents of Walter knew a friend named Agnes Prest who was burnt at

the stake in Exeter. Walter’s father was almost captured to be taken to the stake.

He just escaped by a second when he took shelter in a church tower. This

happened at a riot, by riots being constant, the city was an unsafe place to...
