Sin in The Scarlet Letter

Throughout history, people have committed all types of sins. Whether they are major or minor, people have been punished for them. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is punished for her sin of adultery. She is sentenced to three hours on the scaffold and a lifetime of wearing an embroidered “A” on her chest. In today’s day Hester’s punishment may seem a little harsh. These days when a man or woman commit adultery it isn’t considered as bad as people saw it to be in the 1800’s. People aren’t punished as severely as Hester was in The Scarlet Letter.
