Shylock

Is Shylock a villain or victim of circumstances?
I feel that Shylock is more of a victim than a villain of circumstances. Yes, he went to all means to get Antonio killed and wanted so badly to see Antonio suffering. But it is perfectly normal for a guy that was driven to that state, he was spat on, kicked at and called a dog just because he was a Jew and not a Christian.
