SHOULD CANADA HAVE THE DEATH PENALTY?

The human community is saddened by violence, endangered by the injustice involved. Violent crime is as ancient as the human family; it has a powerful, harmful effect on society. Civil society is grounded in strong traditions of free speech and freedom. Instead of loving, we fear our neighbor. Canada shouldn’t have the death penalty.

Innocent people are convicted of capital crimes with some frequency. Since, 1973, 107 people in 25 states have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence. Jesse Tafero, whose conviction had been executed in 1990 before this evidence of innocence for killing 2 policemen had been uncovered. Walter McMillian was released from Alabama’s death row after having spent 6 years there, convicted of the shooting death of a storekeeper, finally was freed. Kirk Bloodsworth was sentenced to death for the 1984 rape and murder of a nine year old girl in Maryland, however, years later on June 28, 1993, after...
