'Shopping' by Joyce Carol Oates is a story about a mother, Mrs. Dietrich and a daughter, Nola who have problems in their relationship. Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich have divorced and the mother and daughter live in the city. Nola goes to an acadamy in Maine. Nola is anorexic, she is very concerned about how she looks. She used to be chubby. Mrs. Dietrich is afraid of Nola. Nola shows her a lot of attitude. Nola is quite a problem child. As a kid she brought up uncomfortable topics while guests around. Their parents have quarells over her dissentful behavior. The mother and daughter love to shop. They are rather rich. They buy whatever they like. Nola just hang out with her mother because she buys her things. When Nola is away in Maine she hardly ever calls her. Mrs. Dietrich gets quite upset over this. Nola brings up that she wants to go to France for a semester but Mrs. Dietrich says that Nola's father would not agree. Nola has no respect and says she does not care of her father. The central ...
