Sheila Jackson Lee: Personal Background


Sheila Jackson Lee was born January 12th, 1950 in Jamaica, New York. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University in 1972. Later she received her law degree from the University of Virginia in 1975. After school she was an attorney Houston from 1975 to 1987. She also served as a Houston municipal court judge from 87 to 89 and was on the City Council from 1990 to 1995. In 1994 she ran for the U.S. Congress in the 18th Congressional District of Texas and won with over 70 percent of the vote. She was reelected in 1996 with nearly 80 percent of the vote. This was the beginning of her reoccurring success as a congresswoman. Today Sheila has a husband named Elwyn and two children named Erica and Jason. She is very mobile and is always found traveling. Her next election year is 2004.
