The novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles tells a story of one boy name Gene who narrates his fun-filled past about his summers with his best friend, Phineas. “Sports are the absolute good.” narrates Gene when he explains about how when we play sports there is no loser.
“Finny never permitted himself to realize that when you won they lost. That would have destroyed the perfect beauty which was sport. Nothing bad ever happened in sports; they were the absolute good.” Gene tells us that even though many people are competitive when it comes to sports, the whole idea of sports is to beat a goal set by one self. When we win a game or match, our first thought is never “They lost”, it is usually “I won!” This is what sport is all about.
