Art is an extremely powerful tool when communicating society’s important social or political issues. Using text and signs can further emphasise the importance of an issue or contradict the issue completely, creating an artwork that reads with multiple layers of meaning and references.

Artists, Jenny Holtzer, Jenny Watson and Barbara Kruger explore the study of signs systems throughout their art works to create pieces of social and political masterpieces. Due to their use of signifiers representing real, everyday objects the relationship between the viewer or ‘reader’ and the artwork becomes increasingly complex and strong through the use of sign systems embedded deeply into their artwork.
