Deforestation
Deforestation is the process of changing land use from forest to non forest use.
In the 1980s global deforestation was estimated at 17 to 20 million hectares per year. The tropical forests of South America and Southeast Asia are being cut and burned at an alarming rate for large and small agricultural uses. Fires set for these purposes often rage out of control. The "Haze" in Southeast Asia during 1997 was the result of extensive fires burning unchecked through drought-stricken forests. In Indonesia alone, an area at least the size of New Jersey was burned.
Deforestation for wood and agricultural land can provide numerous economic benefits. These include development, commercial farming and selling wood for industrious use. This can have many damaging environmental impacts and can harshly affect local and regional climate.
