Abortion
Spontaneous abortion is the termination of pregnancy before the twentieth week of gestation, as a result of abnormalities or maternal environment. Up to 30% of pregnancies may end as spontaneous abortions, many caused by abnormal embryonic development, chromosomal defects, and inheritable disorders. Most other spontaneous abortions result from maternal causes such as advancing maternal age, imparity, chronic infections, chronic debilitating diseases, poor nutrition and recreational drug use. This is usually referred to by the public as a miscarriage.
Care Required
When spontaneous abortion occurs, the nurse should perform the following:
„« Take vital signs: These include temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respirations.
„« Give the client support (as much one on one time as possible).
„« Administer IV fluids and blood loss may be replaced with transfusions.
„« Suggest bed rest if needed.
„« Client teaching.
