Have you ever seen an add on television and gone out to buy the product its advertising? The dominant message found in all the corporate ads is BUY, BUY, BUY. Bruce Dawe’s “enter without so much as knocking” and Green Days “fashion victim” both rely on language techniques to show society the effects of consumerism. Consumerism is a significant feature of modern society and the poet Bruce Dawe is highly critical of its negative influence. Throughout his work, Dawe sarcastically attacks the way in which people have been manipulated by the appeal of consumerism. Dawe alerts us to the fact that we have sacrificed our ethics and values in search of a more forfilled and enriched life.
