Southwest Airlines established in 1968 when Rollin King had the idea for a low fare, no frill airline to fly between three of the major cities in Texas.
With advice from his banker John Parker, King saw that the market was open for exploration to expand and fly to big cities around the state.
Air Southwest was approved by the FAA and the Texas Aeronautical Commission approved King’s and Kelleher’s plans for their airline.
Even though they had got approval, stiff opposition blocked them to fly with a temporary restraining order, which argued that there was no need for an extra airline in that area.
Southwest was locked up in a legal battle with there opposition, which they won the right to fly and began to offer a service with a total of three panes, and two hundred employees.
Due to this set back they were in debt due to legal bills they had to pay off. In the first year of operation they lost $3.7 million. In 1973 they started to make a profit and by 1978, so...
