This passage by Sarah Orne Jewett is very adventurous and dangerous. This adventure is set out by a young girl named Sylvia. Even though Sylvia is quite young, the author dramatizes this passage using diction, imagery, and the point-of-view of the protagonist to hold the interest of the readers.
Sylvia begins her adventure with an old tree, which is half a mile from her home. The tress is said to be the “last of its generation” because men discontinued their existence.
