Sappho

It seems more logical to conclude that a soldier, away on a tour of duty, is writing to his wife back home. For example, the poem describes “cavalry corps,” which are soldiers trained to fight on horseback. It also mentions “infantry” which are soldiers that fight by foot. The speaker of the poem appears to be the soldier who is the husband of the recipient. For instance, he states “…will maintain that the swift oars of our fleet are the finest sight on dark earth.” This use of first person demonstrates that it must be the husband writing directly to his wife. It does not matter who is the speaker of the poem, because it has the same effect as long as it stays in the first person.
