San Francisco Airport Expansion
The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is planning an expansion. It is proposing a “runway configuration” that will create a new runway and add on to two existing ones (Save the Bay 1). This new construction will be the largest bay fill expansion in over 60 years, covering 2 square miles, which is more than 1400 acres of the bay (Save the Bay 1). Extensive research shows that the expansion is generating much animosity from environmentalists and bay residents. They are concerned about the potential negative effects this expansion will have on the bay and their own living conditions. While the idea of expanding the San Francisco Airport seems like a good one, the harmful environmental impacts outweigh the benefits of the airports growth.
