since the 1600's, helping to influence every facet
of our culture
2. It is also one of the most enjoyable
and relaxing sports today

II. History of Sailing - started out simply as form of
exploration & transport

1. Magellan - circumnavigate the world with one sailboat
2. Columbus - would not have been possible without sail
B. Marketing
1. Started slave-trading ring
2. Shipped goods from England to America as well
C. Wartime
1. Naval fleets started out as sailing ships, of course now
have moved to motor because of reliability and speed
