Carthage, one of the most famous cities of ancient times, was founded on the north coast of Africa by the Phoenicians of Tyre at around 814 B.C. The Phoenicians, who were renowned for their efforts in trading, felt that they needed to create Carthage to help secure trade routes in the Mediterranean from Spain to Phoenician eastern cities in what is now Turkey. However the Phoenician empire soon fell apart in around 700 B.C where the eastern cities of the empire came under attack from the Assyrians and later on the
Persians. Because of this Carthage became independent from the destroyed Phoenicians and formed into a city-state.

Over the next few centuries, Carthage slowly grew and started trading goods from their land with in the north African area. By the start of the 3rd century B.C, Carthage had
