The significance of Act 3 scene 1 to the play of Romeo and Juliet.

The play of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is fuelled with passion from the very beginning. At first this passion is shown in the form of anger and violence, as the Capulets and Montagues fight. Later on this is shown when Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love with each other. Act 3 scene 1 is an accumulation of the physical and violent passion that exists throughout the play.
The prologue states that ‘A pair of a star-crossed lovers take their lives’. Act 3 Scene 1 is the point in the play where the fates seem to start to really oppose the love between Romeo and Juliet. Before now it has brought them together, from the moment Romeo read the invitation it seems that Romeo and Juliet were destined to be together, until this point. It is now that the fate of the couples seems to try at any point in the story to tear them apart. In the end it is only death that can ensure their unity.
