With the change in times, it became necessary for the play to be brought into the present so that the youth of the 21st century could experience Shakespeare in their own language. Baz Luhrmann captured the Shakespearean tragedy, and whirled it into the new setting of Verona Beach, a futuristic urban backdrop with two rival gangs. Baz Luhrmann's Shakespearean romance turns into a sexy, passionate love story that defies the boundaries Shakespeare had permitted with his Romeo and Juliet. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes bring sparks to the stage as their love entangles one another. The camera, costumes, and lighting used in this version allows Romeo and Juliet to plunge into deeper waters and wholly capture what the true feelings of each character.
